This month’s color is BLACK, inspired by the wrought-iron butterflyfish (Chaetodon daedalma). I looked up the origin of the Latin name, and here’s what I found:

Chaetodon daedalma Jordan & Fowler 1902    a piece of art embroidery, referring to scales, their centers pale yellow and edges broadly margined with blackish brown, “forming a beautiful reticulated or netted pattern”

What an appropriate name! I wanted to learn more about this fish, and I found out that it has even more in common with us quilters:

Adult Wrought-iron butterflyfish have strong schooling behavior and tend to stay together in groups of 10 or more individuals but sometimes form very large aggregations; may migrate over a wide area.

Choosing fabrics from the fabric pantry was easy when I saw the fish! The top print is from Carolyn Friedlander’s Architextures line for Robert Kaufman (Screen Print D# 13503) and the bottom is from Quotation by Zen Chic for Moda. These older fabrics are hard to find now, but don’t they play beautifully together?

Jen’s simple but clever block pattern went together quickly. Luckily, I have a 6 1/2″ Bloc-Loc half square triangle ruler, which made trimming a breeze–especially on a rotating cutting mat.

Pin those intersections for perfect points! Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. For this one, I did–and you can’t argue with these results:
