Although at times it can be a whirlwind, December often brings a soft hush—a slowing down, a turning inward, a natural moment for remembering where we come from. As quilters, we hold one of the most beautiful gifts: the ability to turn memory into something physical. Every tradition, every story, every person who shaped us can find its way into a block, a quilting pattern, or a fabric pull.

Tradition in quilting isn’t only about techniques passed down through generations (though those may be treasures). It’s also about the small rituals we repeat year after year: pulling out winter quilts for the first cold snap, making gifts, or stitching in the glow of holiday lights or by a roaring fire.

This month, I invite you to pause and reflect on the traditions—old, new, and evolving—that color your quilting life.

Traditions We Inherit

Many of us learned quilting through community, whether at a guild, with a family member, in an online quilting community, or through a stack of well-loved quilting books. Practices you inherit from your learning community often become anchors (some in a good sense, others…not so much). Maybe you always start a quilt by washing your fabric because “that’s how Mom did it,” or maybe your guild has a long-standing block swap that ties you to quilters across time. Maybe your grandmother made a quilted gift for every new baby in the family, and you’ve started doing the same thing. Maybe you feel like you have to save every single tiny scrap of leftover fabric.

Consider what you’ve carried forward without even realizing it.

Traditions We Create

Equally powerful are the traditions we start for ourselves. A “New Year, New Quilt” project. An annual fabric pantry clean-out. A holiday quilt that returns to your living room every December. Hand-stitching a special ornament to commemorate each year. These small milestones help us feel grounded, creative, and connected, both to our craft and to the people who share it with us.

This year, think about the traditions you want to intentionally nurture. What would you love to build into your quilting story moving forward? What can you let go of?

A Gift for You

To help guide your reflection, I created a printable worksheet that you can download. It’s a prompt to help you identify what matters most to you in this season.

May your holiday season be filled with warmth, memory, and meaning.

Flourishing

Flourishing is a year-long journey that invites quilters to explore meaningful themes each month—clarity, connection, self-care, creativity, mindfulness, and beyond. Each month brings a new focus, sparking thoughtful reflection and creativity. Flourishing stitches together personal growth and the art of quilting, offering a fulfilling path for quilters to connect, create, and thrive.
