My NYC: Star-Crossed New York

I live in the southern half of New Jersey, so it’s not a huge deal to visit New York City from here. I don’t go very often, though, but when I do, it’s for a very good reason. You know, like to run an iconic marathon, check out a show on Broadway, attend a wedding, win a sewing machine in a silent auction at Quilters Take Manhattan, or take a class at Gotham Quilts.1

Gotham Quilts is a fun modern quilt shop to visit. It’s right in midtown Manhattan, walking distance from Penn Station. They pack plenty of eye candy into the small space, but the shop doesn’t feel overcrowded or cluttered. There’s even a classroom in the loft! As a bonus, a tree is planted for every online order.

And now, Gotham Quilts has their own original fabric collection: My NYC! When I received my fat quarter bundle, I immediately fell in love with the colors and with the soft hand.2 Then I took a closer look. And I saw…PIZZA RAT.

I was done for. I couldn’t stop laughing.

Okay, eventually I did stop laughing. And I pulled an easy, quick, and (most importantly) fat quarter-friendly pattern out of my stable: Star-Crossed Plaid.

In a nod to the “old” New York of the eighties that I remember so well, of course I used Moda Grunge along with the My NYC fat quarter bundle.

1Yes, I’ve done all of those things. I ran the NYC marathon in 2013. I’ve been to many shows. My brother got married in Brooklyn. I had to carry the sewing machine in my arms to Penn Station from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and was lucky enough to get it its own seat on the train. And last but not least, I took Timna Tarr’s map-making workshop in 2019. back

2 Fabric hand is defined as the estimated quality of a fabric, evaluated as reaction of the sense of touch, which is integrated in our brain to a total value. Important components of the sensory perception are the smoothness, compressibility and elasticity of the textile sample. Source: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/fabric-hand back
