Not-Your-Typical Quilter, but who is?

My name is Becca and I’m addicted to jelly rolls.1

Well, I’ve managed to cut down my collection of 2.5″ strips quite a bit, but the tendency is still there. When I walk into a quilt shop, I’m immediately drawn to those colorful coordinated curated collections and absolutely have to rummage through them. But I’ve gotten to the point where I can usually walk away if I don’t have a particular project in mind.

Now that I have a copy of Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts (by Michelle Lander Cain, from C&T Publishing), my wallet may no longer be safe in the precut section.

The 14 projects in this book are all absolutely adorable! It took some time to decide on which one to start with.

A quilt made of colorful strippy hexagons with white background fabric that creates a starry secondary pattern. The quilt is draped on a teal couch with round pillows next to it and has a book with a mug stacked on top.

I eventually decided to start by making Myriad (pictured above) using a Red, White, and Blooms strip pack from Island Batik. Myriad is a generously sized throw quilt that uses an entire jelly roll plus background fabric. I love the secondary stars that show up when you assemble the top – who doesn’t love a secondary pattern?

There are templates provided in the book, but I worked it out using a 60 degree triangle ruler instead. Don’t go out and buy a ruler if you don’t already have one, the templates are just fine.

It had been a while since I made a triangle quilt, but it came together pretty quickly and easily once I got back into the rhythm.

Jo from Block Party Quilts quilted Myriad for me with a red 108″ wide backing fabric, which I then used to bind the quilt, too. Chief Feline Officer Maple inspected my work and approved.

I just love the results! It was so much fun to make that I’m teaching a class. If you’re in or around South Jersey, join me at Block Party Quilts for this two part event. We’ll focus on cutting and piecing the triangles on June 26, 2025 and then piece the top on July 10, 2025.

  1. A jelly roll is a set of 2.5″ x width-of-fabric strips, typically around 40 pieces, usually color-coordinated and often solely from one fabric collection. They are also called by other names, such as strip packs, depending on the manufacturer. But most quilters call them all jelly rolls, regardless. ↩︎
