Quilting has always been a way to preserve stories—not just through patterns and fabric, but through the memories, identities, and traditions stitched into every piece. When we explore our heritage as quilters, we open the door to deeper creativity and more meaningful connections to the past, present, and future.

Heritage doesn’t only mean ancestry or nationality. It can include family traditions, community values, language, religion, migration, creative influences, or even the personal rituals that ground you. Some quilters sew with fabrics passed down from loved ones. Others draw inspiration from the designs, colors, or symbols of a particular region or culture. And many of us are building new heritage right now, shaping what will be passed along in quilts of our own.

My mother started quilting near the end of the twentieth century, but I didn’t know there were any other quilters (or surviving quilts) in my family until 2023, when my aunt invited me to take a look at my great-great-aunt’s handiwork that she had found in a trunk in my great-grandmother’s attic almost 50 years ago. Aunt Achsah seemed to prefer solids over prints.

explore your quilting heritage

This month, I invite you to reflect on what heritage means to you—and how it shows up (or could show up) in your quilting. Maybe there’s a story you’ve never told through fabric, a motif or symbol that feels meaningful, or a technique you’d like to learn from another cultural tradition. Whether you’re working with deep family roots or simply starting to create your own legacy, your quilting is part of a bigger story.

To help you explore this, I’ve created a free printable worksheet full of thoughtful prompts. It’s not about making a museum-worthy masterpiece—it’s about honoring what’s meaningful to you.
