When you first start quilting, the tools feel unfamiliar, the instructions sound like a secret code, and every stitch may be second-guessed. Even years into the practice, it’s not uncommon to doubt your choices: Did I pick the right colors? Is my piecing accurate enough? Will this even look good when it’s done?

But confidence in quilting doesn’t arrive all at once. It’s built slowly, piece by piece, just like a quilt itself.

Confidence is like batting: it’s not always visible, but it gives strength and structure to everything else. It fills the space between knowledge and action. And like a favorite quilt, it gets softer and stronger the more we use it.

Where Does Quilting Confidence Come From?

Confidence grows through reflection, risk-taking, repetition, repetition, and repetition. It’s built when we:

  • Finish a quilt (even if it’s imperfect)
  • Try something new (and survive the learning curve)
  • Solve a problem creatively
  • Receive or offer encouragement
  • See progress in our accuracy, speed, or skills

Confidence isn’t bravado. It’s trust. Trust in your process. Trust in your skills. Trust that you’re allowed to make your quilt your way.

build your quilting confidence

This month, I invite you to reflect on the areas where you already feel confident, and identify where you want to grow. I’ve created a free worksheet to help you do just that. You’ll assess your current skills, dream up small steps to stretch your comfort zone, and track your progress along the way.

Whether you’re still threading your first needle or you’ve made a hundred quilts, you deserve to feel strong, skilled, and joyful in your quilting practice.
