At its heart, quilting has always been about comfort. There’s the comfort we find in the act itself – the rhythms of stitching, the hand of the fabric, the feeling of accomplishment. Quilting can be a retreat, offering peace when life feels overwhelming. It’s a practice that slows us down, centers us, and reminds us that beauty is crafted one stitch at a time.

We’ve talked about this a bit when we covered mindfulness and self-care.

But quilting is also about the comfort we give. A quilt is more than “cutting apart fabric and sewing it back together.” It’s warmth, safety, and love. To wrap someone in a quilt is to say, “You are cared for. You are not alone.” Whether it’s given to celebrate a milestone, to ease sorrow, or just because, quilts carry comfort across time and distance. Quilts connect the maker and the recipient, even when they never meet.

In quilting, comfort comes full circle: what soothes the maker becomes solace for another.

I made this quilt as part of a Comfort Quilt Quilt-Along several years ago.

What’s a comfort quilt?

A comfort quilt might be a nostalgic T-shirt quilt for someone moving away from their parents for the first time. It might be a memory quilt made from dress shirts or uniforms for a grieving family. It could be a small quilt for someone to wrap around their shoulders during a difficult cancer treatment, or for a child in foster care to use as a familiar security blanket in a new home. It could be a larger quilt for an unhoused person to sleep under, or to welcome a refugee family to the neighborhood. It could be for someone you know who needs a boost. It could be for you.

A comfort quilt doesn’t have to be intricately pieced or made with the latest fabrics. Scrappy quilts can be fabulous, and a simple nine-patch or rail fence quilt contains as much love as the fussiest New York Beauty quilt you’ve ever seen. You don’t have to quilt them to death, either – why not take a UFO quilt top and do a little free-motion meandering?

If you’re planning to make a comfort quilt for an organization, be sure to check and double-check the requirements of the organization you have in mind. They vary greatly!
