Fat Quarter Shop offers lots of fun and easy patterns that use precuts, and I’m always delighted when they ask me to join a quilt-along team! This month, the Heart of America Quilt-Along has me playing with red, white, and blue fabrics and nifty half-square triangle paper templates. The PDF pattern is free, and the QAL is split into four parts over the month of March. It’s not too late to join!

I’m using Dani Mogstad’s American Beauty collection for Riley Blake, and supplementing with Kona cotton from my personal collection in White for the background and Windsor for the accent fabric.

I was admittedly skeptical of the Triangles on a Roll paper. I had tried a different brand early in my quilting “career” and wasn’t satisfied. But I really enjoyed the process with these!

(I did, however, accidentally make more half square triangles (HSTs) than I needed because I started sewing before I finished my coffee. Oops! Luckily, I have more than enough fabric to spare.)

I liked that I could sew long lines to create so many perfect HSTs at once. I measured, and they were absolutely spot-on.

*If you choose to use Triangles on a Roll, check the instructions on the package before cutting your fabric! You’ll have to cut a little differently than the pattern.

I cut and stitched the first week’s steps to make the Heart of America quilt in less than a day!
